When anxiety hits, having go-to strategies can make all the difference. Here are five evidence-based techniques you can use right now.

Anxiety can feel overwhelming, but having a toolkit of strategies can help you navigate those difficult moments. Here are five techniques backed by research that you can start using today.

1. The 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique

When anxiety spirals, this technique brings you back to the present. Name 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste. It interrupts the anxiety loop and anchors you in the here and now.

2. Box Breathing

Used by Navy SEALs to stay calm under pressure, box breathing is simple but powerful. Breathe in for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts, breathe out for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts. Repeat until you feel calmer. This activates your parasympathetic nervous system and signals to your body that you're safe.

3. The Worry Window

Instead of fighting worries all day, schedule a 15-minute 'worry window.' When anxious thoughts pop up, write them down and tell yourself you'll address them during your scheduled time. Often, by the time your worry window arrives, the anxiety has passed.

4. Movement

Anxiety creates physical tension and excess energy. Even a short walk, some stretches, or shaking out your hands can help release that tension. You don't need a full workout—just move your body in a way that feels good.

5. Challenge Your Thoughts

Anxiety often tells us the worst-case scenario is certain. Challenge this by asking: What evidence do I have for this thought? What would I tell a friend in this situation? What's a more balanced way to see this? This cognitive reframing can take the edge off anxious thoughts.
