Surviving a Breakup: A Gentle Guide

Safe Haven Connect CIC Team · · 5 min read

Heartbreak is one of the most painful human experiences. Whether you ended it or they did, here's how to look after yourself during this difficult time.

A breakup can feel like grief — because it is. You're mourning the loss of a person, a future you imagined, and a version of yourself that existed within that relationship. It's okay to feel devastated. It's okay to not be okay.

Allow Yourself to Grieve

Don't rush yourself through this. There's no timeline for heartbreak. Some days you'll feel fine; others, the pain will hit you like a wave. Both are normal. Let yourself cry, feel angry, feel confused. Suppressing these emotions only delays healing.

Resist the Urge to Check Up on Them

Social media makes breakups infinitely harder. Seeing your ex's posts, analysing their stories, checking who they're following — it all keeps you stuck. Consider muting or unfollowing them, at least temporarily. It's not petty; it's self-preservation.

Lean on Your People

This is the time to let your friends and family in. You don't have to process everything alone. Talk about it, cry about it, let people bring you tea and sit with you. Connection heals — and the people who love you want to help.

Rediscover Who You Are

In relationships, we often lose parts of ourselves. A breakup, painful as it is, gives you the chance to rediscover what you enjoy, what you want, and who you are outside of a partnership. Pick up old hobbies, try new things, spend time with yourself.

Don't Make Big Decisions Right Now

Heartbreak clouds your judgement. Try not to make major life decisions while you're in the thick of it. Give yourself time to settle before changing jobs, moving cities, or jumping into something new.

It Will Get Better

Right now, it probably feels like this pain will last forever. It won't. One day, you'll realise you went an entire day without thinking about them. Then a week. Healing isn't linear, but it does happen. You will feel whole again.
