Understanding Adjustment Disorder

When a life change hits harder than expected — it's okay to struggle.

What Is Adjustment Disorder?

Adjustment disorder is a stress-related condition that develops when you have difficulty coping with a significant life change or stressful event.

It's more than just feeling sad — it involves an emotional or behavioural reaction that seems out of proportion to the event.

Common Triggers

Relationship breakups or divorce.

Job loss or work problems.

Moving to a new area.

Illness or health problems.

Financial difficulties.

Bereavement.

Retirement or life transitions.

Having a baby.

Moving Forward

Talk therapy can help you process the change and develop coping strategies.

Lean on your support network — don't try to handle everything alone.

Maintain your daily routines as much as possible.

Be patient with yourself — adjustment takes time.

Most people recover within 6 months once the stressor is resolved or they've adapted.

If symptoms persist, speak to your GP.
