Understanding Agoraphobia
When leaving the house feels terrifying — what agoraphobia is and how to manage it.
What Is Agoraphobia?
Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder involving fear and avoidance of situations where escape might be difficult or help unavailable during a panic attack.
Contrary to popular belief, it's not simply a fear of open spaces — it can include fear of crowds, public transport, being outside alone, or even being at home alone.
Common Triggers
Using public transport.
Being in open or enclosed spaces.
Standing in queues or being in crowds.
Being outside the home alone.
Any situation where you feel trapped or unable to escape.
Recovery Steps
CBT with graded exposure therapy is highly effective.
Start with small steps — even opening the front door counts.
Breathing and grounding techniques can help manage panic in the moment.
Having a trusted companion can make outings feel safer initially.
Medication may help reduce anxiety enough to engage with therapy.
