Betrayal Trauma: When Someone You Trusted Breaks You

The deepest wounds come from the people we trusted most. Betrayal trauma changes how you see the world.

What Is Betrayal Trauma?

Betrayal trauma occurs when someone you depend on or trust deeply violates that trust — through infidelity, abuse, deception, or abandonment.

It's distinct from other traumas because the source of danger is the same person who was supposed to provide safety.

This creates a unique psychological conflict: your attachment system pulls you toward the person, while your threat system screams danger.

How It Affects You

Hypervigilance in all relationships — constantly scanning for signs of betrayal.

Difficulty trusting anyone, even people who've proven trustworthy.

Intrusive thoughts and images related to the betrayal.

Physical symptoms: nausea, insomnia, loss of appetite, panic attacks.

Questioning your own judgment: 'How did I not see this?'

Self-blame: 'What did I do wrong?' (The answer is nothing.)

Difficulty being present — your mind is either in the past (the betrayal) or the future (anticipating the next one).

Try This Now

It's not your fault: Say out loud: 'The betrayal was their choice, not my fault. My trust was a strength, not a weakness.'

Grounding practice: When intrusive thoughts about the betrayal arise, use the 5-4-3-2-1 technique: 5 things you can see, 4 hear, 3 touch, 2 smell, 1 taste.

Safe person inventory: List people in your life who HAVE been trustworthy. Evidence that trust can be safe helps counterbalance the betrayal.
