Why Can't I Make Decisions?

Paralysed by choices, terrified of getting it wrong. Decision anxiety is exhausting.

When Every Choice Feels Impossible

Decision anxiety goes beyond normal indecisiveness. It's the paralysing fear that any choice you make will be wrong, and the consequences will be catastrophic.

This can apply to everything from major life decisions (career, relationships) to tiny daily choices (what to eat, what to watch).

The irony: not deciding IS a decision — and often the worst one, because you're stuck.

Why Decisions Are So Hard

Perfectionism: you want the 'right' answer, but most decisions don't have one.

Fear of regret: you imagine future you looking back and blaming present you.

Too many options: the paradox of choice — more options = more anxiety.

Low self-trust: past 'mistakes' have eroded your confidence in your own judgment.

Overthinking: you analyse every possible outcome until you're exhausted.

Try This Now

Two-minute rule: For low-stakes decisions, give yourself 2 minutes maximum. Set a timer. When it goes off, go with your gut. Train yourself that speed doesn't equal recklessness.

The 10-10-10 test: Will this matter in 10 minutes? 10 months? 10 years? Most decisions that feel enormous right now won't matter in 10 months.

Flip a coin: Not to let the coin decide — but to notice your reaction. If the coin says 'A' and you feel disappointed, you wanted B all along. Your gut knows.

When to Seek Professional Help

If decision paralysis is affecting your work, relationships, or daily life.

If you avoid making any decisions and rely on others to choose for you.

If the fear of making a wrong decision causes panic attacks or significant distress.

CBT can help you build tolerance for uncertainty and rebuild trust in your own judgment.

Educational self-help, not a diagnosis, treatment or crisis service. If you are in immediate danger, call 999. For UK listening support, call Samaritans on 116 123 or text SHOUT to 85258.
