Why Can't I Feel Anything?

Emotional numbness is your brain's way of protecting you — but living without feelings isn't really living.

When Feelings Disappear

Emotional numbness — feeling flat, empty, or disconnected from your emotions — is more common than people realise.

It's not the same as feeling sad. It's the absence of feeling anything at all.

This is often your brain's protective response to overwhelming stress, trauma, or prolonged emotional pain. It's a form of emotional shutdown.

What Causes Emotional Numbness

Depression: Numbness is a common but under-recognised symptom of depression.

Trauma: Your nervous system can shut down emotions to protect you from overwhelm.

Burnout: Chronic stress can exhaust your capacity to feel.

Grief: Sometimes grief is so big that your brain can't process it all at once.

Medication: Some antidepressants can cause emotional blunting as a side effect.

Dissociation: Feeling detached from yourself or your surroundings.

Try This Now

Sensory wake-up: Hold an ice cube, smell something strong (coffee, peppermint), listen to music that used to move you. Sensory input can gently activate your emotional system.

Emotion wheel: Look up an emotion wheel online. Point to whatever word feels closest to your experience right now — even if it's 'empty' or 'confused'. Naming creates connection.

Micro-expression: Even without feelings, try smiling for 30 seconds. Your facial muscles send feedback to your brain that can gently nudge emotional processing.

When to Seek Professional Help

If emotional numbness has lasted more than a few weeks.

If you can't feel love, joy, or connection with people you care about.

If numbness followed a traumatic experience.

If you think medication might be contributing — never stop medication without medical guidance, but discuss emotional blunting with your prescriber.

Therapy can safely help you reconnect with your emotions at a pace that feels manageable.
