When Health Anxiety Causes Real Physical Symptoms

Your health anxiety isn't 'just in your head' — it creates genuine physical symptoms. Understanding this breaks the cycle.

The Vicious Cycle

Health anxiety creates a cruel cycle: you worry about your health, which causes stress, which creates physical symptoms, which gives you more to worry about.

Anxiety can cause headaches, chest pain, dizziness, tingling, stomach problems, muscle tension, and fatigue — all of which mimic serious medical conditions.

This isn't imaginary. The symptoms are physically real. They're caused by your stress response, not by the disease you fear.

Common Anxiety-Caused Symptoms

Chest tightness or pain (mimics heart problems).

Dizziness and lightheadedness (mimics neurological conditions).

Stomach pain, nausea, IBS (mimics digestive diseases).

Tingling or numbness (mimics nerve damage or MS).

Headaches (mimics brain tumours — the classic health anxiety fear).

Muscle twitches (mimics ALS/motor neurone disease).

Fatigue (mimics cancer, anaemia, thyroid problems).

Try This Now

Symptom diary: Track your symptoms alongside your anxiety levels. Notice the correlation: symptoms worsen when anxiety is high and improve when you're distracted or relaxed.

Body check limit: If you compulsively check your body (lumps, pulse, breathing), set a rule: one check per day, maximum. Multiple checks feed the cycle.

The 24-hour rule: When a new symptom appears, wait 24 hours before Googling or booking a GP appointment. Most anxiety symptoms fluctuate and resolve within this time.

When to Seek Professional Help

Always get genuinely new or concerning symptoms checked by a doctor.

But if you've been repeatedly reassured and the worry persists, the issue is anxiety, not physical health.

CBT for health anxiety (available through NHS Talking Therapies) is highly effective.

Your GP can help distinguish between appropriate medical investigation and anxiety-driven reassurance-seeking.

Educational self-help, not a diagnosis, treatment or crisis service. If you are in immediate danger, call 999. For UK listening support, call Samaritans on 116 123 or text SHOUT to 85258.
