Healthy Communication in Communities

How to express yourself clearly and kindly in online support spaces.

Why Communication Matters

Online communication lacks tone of voice, facial expressions, and body language. This means messages can easily be misunderstood.

Being intentional about how you communicate helps everyone feel heard and respected.

Tips for Clear Communication

Be specific about what you need: 'I just need to vent' vs 'I'd like advice'.

Use 'I feel' statements instead of 'You make me feel'.

Re-read your message before posting — does it say what you mean?

If a topic is sensitive, add a content warning.

Ask before giving advice: 'Would you like some suggestions, or would you prefer I just listen?'

Responding to Others

Acknowledge their feelings before offering perspective.

Avoid starting responses with 'But...' or 'At least...'

If you disagree, lead with what you do agree on.

It's okay to say 'I don't know what to say, but I'm here.'

A simple heart reaction or 'Thinking of you' can mean the world.

When in doubt, kindness is always the right choice.
