Understanding Intermittent Explosive Disorder
When anger erupts without warning — it's not a choice, and help is available.
What Is IED?
Intermittent Explosive Disorder involves recurring episodes of impulsive, aggressive, violent behaviour or angry verbal outbursts that are grossly out of proportion to the situation.
The explosions are brief, usually lasting less than 30 minutes, and are followed by relief, then often remorse.
Warning Signs
Rage, irritability, increased energy, or racing thoughts before an episode.
Aggressive outbursts that seem to come from nowhere.
Throwing or breaking objects.
Road rage.
Verbal aggression far beyond what the situation warrants.
Physical aggression toward people or property.
Feeling relief during the outburst followed by regret.
Treatment Options
CBT helps identify triggers and develop alternative responses.
Anger management techniques and relaxation training.
Medication may help reduce impulsive aggression.
Learning to recognise early warning signs in your body.
Creating an 'anger action plan' for when you feel an episode building.
Removing yourself from situations when you feel the urge building.
