Self-Compassion: The Skill That Changes Everything

You show compassion to everyone except yourself. It's time to turn that kindness inward.

What Self-Compassion Is

Self-compassion means treating yourself with the same kindness, understanding, and patience you'd show a good friend.

It has three components: self-kindness (rather than self-criticism), common humanity (recognising that suffering is shared, not isolating), and mindfulness (observing your pain without drowning in it).

Self-compassion is NOT self-pity, self-indulgence, or letting yourself off the hook. Research shows it actually increases motivation, resilience, and accountability.

Why It's So Hard

You were taught that self-criticism drives performance. (Research shows the opposite — self-compassion produces better results.)

You believe you don't deserve kindness from yourself.

You confuse self-compassion with weakness or complacency.

Your inner critic has been running the show for so long that kindness feels suspicious.

You can show compassion to literally anyone else — but turning it inward feels impossible.

Try This Now

The friend test: Think about how you spoke to yourself today when something went wrong. Now imagine saying those exact words to your best friend. You wouldn't. So why is it acceptable to say them to yourself?

Compassionate touch: Place both hands over your heart. Feel the warmth. Say: 'This is a moment of suffering. Suffering is part of being human. May I be kind to myself.' This activates your body's care-giving system.

Rewrite one thought: Take one self-critical thought from today and rewrite it compassionately. 'I'm so stupid' becomes 'I made a mistake. That's human. What can I learn from this?'

When to Seek Professional Help

If you're unable to show yourself any compassion despite trying.

If self-criticism is contributing to depression, anxiety, or self-harm.

If the idea of being kind to yourself feels dangerous or wrong.

Compassion-focused therapy (CFT) is specifically designed to build self-compassion. Mindful self-compassion (MSC) programmes are also available.
