Recognising Toxic Dynamics in Groups

How to spot unhealthy patterns in communities and protect yourself.

What Makes a Dynamic Toxic

Not every difficult interaction is toxic. But patterns of behaviour that consistently leave people feeling worse, unsafe, or manipulated are cause for concern.

Recognising these patterns early helps you protect your wellbeing.

Warning Signs

One person dominating every conversation.

Dismissing or minimising others' experiences.

Gatekeeping: 'You're not really depressed if...'

Drama and gossip replacing genuine support.

Pressure to share more than you're comfortable with.

Cliques that exclude newcomers.

Passive-aggressive comments disguised as 'honesty'.

People being punished for setting boundaries.

Protecting Yourself

Trust your instincts — if something feels off, it probably is.

You don't need to confront toxic behaviour alone — use moderators or admin.

It's okay to leave a group that doesn't feel safe.

Maintain connections outside any single community.

Set firm boundaries around interactions that drain you.

Remember that a truly supportive community lifts people up, not tears them down.
