Understanding Sleepwalking and Sleep Disorders

When sleep isn't restful — parasomnias and their impact on wellbeing.

What Are Parasomnias?

Parasomnias are unusual behaviours that occur during sleep, including sleepwalking, sleep talking, night terrors, and sleep paralysis.

They're more common than people think and can significantly affect sleep quality and mental health.

Impact on Wellbeing

Poor sleep quality despite spending enough time in bed.

Anxiety about going to sleep.

Injury risk during sleepwalking episodes.

Embarrassment about sleep behaviours.

Strain on relationships (disturbing a partner's sleep).

Daytime fatigue and its effects on mood and function.

Managing Sleep Disorders

Keep a consistent sleep schedule.

Reduce stress — parasomnias often worsen with stress.

Avoid alcohol and sleep deprivation, which are common triggers.

Make the sleep environment safe (lock doors, remove obstacles for sleepwalkers).

A sleep study may be needed for diagnosis.

CBT for insomnia can help with anxiety about sleep.

Some medications can help in severe cases — discuss with your doctor.
